Educational Background:  Mary Ellen Gillette has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Michigan State University and a Master’s in Education from Temple University. She has also completed extensive graduate level work at the University of South Florida.

 

Professional Experience:  Mrs. Gillette retired in 2002 from the School District of Hillsborough County. During her tenure with the School District starting in 1975, she held several positions: health occupations teacher, supervisor of school health services and director of student services. As the District’s first health services supervisor, Mrs. Gillette developed policies and procedures to guide the provision of a healthy and safe environment for students and staff. As a strong advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration in the provision of student services, she assisted in the development and implementation of Family and Student Support Teams (FASST). She worked with many agencies in the community to advocate and promote the development and continuation of services for children and families.

 

Mrs. Gillette was a founding member and the first president of the Florida School Health Association. She served on the Hillsborough County Health Care Advisory Board for sixteen years, six of those years as chairman. She continues to serve on the study committee established by the Board of Commissioners to make recommendations concerning operation of the local health care plan. She has been active in community organizations serving in the past on the boards of the American Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Prevent Blindness Florida, the Governor’s Task Force on AIDS. Mrs. Gillette currently serves on the Hillsborough Kids, Inc. Board and the Kids Health Care Foundation, Inc. Board, as well as chair of the Success 4 Kids and Families Board.

 

Mrs. Gillette has worked with pregnant and parenting teens both in her positions with the School District and in her retirement. She and a colleague from the University of South Florida developed and implemented a program to assist parenting teens in obtaining child care and learning parenting skills.

 

Personal:  Mrs. Gillette is married to Dr. Donald Gillette, a retired attorney. She has three sons and seven grandchildren.
